Tomorrow morning at 10AM EDT (14:00 UTC), we will begin moving all services from our New York data center to Denver, CO. Last Saturday was the read-only test in preparation for this move. It’s a fire sale and everything must go! The major user-facing services that will be involved in the move are:
- All Q&A Sites (including Stack Overflow)
- Stack Overflow Careers
- Chat
- Blogs
- Stack Exchange API
- stackexchange.com
- Area 51
- Stack OpenID
What you can expect
Each of the services listed above will be moved as we move through the day via DNS and CloudFlare pointers. We don’t have an exact schedule as this will be a fluid schedule “as things get done” style, finishing as quickly as we can. There should be no downtime for Q&A, only a brief period of read-only traffic as we migrate databases masters to Denver. Other services like API and Careers will have similar behavior. Chat will undergo a brief outage as we flip it over (on the order of minutes).
We’ll be watching stability throughout the weekend and into next week as we take the New York data center offline for core network maintenance there.
